Root Canal Treatment in Dianella
Root canal therapy is often necessary to save a badly infected or damaged tooth or to address chronic inflammation in the nerve. This may have been caused by decay, repeated dental work, wear and tear, gum disease, cracked fillings or an injury to the tooth. Our goal is to save your tooth from extraction, if possible.

Understanding the Process
While many people believe the procedure is painful, based on what they’ve heard from others – that’s incorrect. We have several techniques to ensure the tooth is anaesthetised properly and totally numb before the procedure begins. The misconception that it’s painful is usually because people come into the clinic in a lot of pain.
After the tooth is numb, our dentist drills a hole into the tooth and removes the soft centre, known as the dental pulp. The pulp is made up of connective tissue, nerves and blood supply and extends into the roots of the tooth.
After the pulp is removed, fillers are placed to prevent bacteria from entering the nerve system, and a temporary sealant is used to prevent further damage. The dentist discusses the options available – to permanently seal the opening – with the patient and proceeds accordingly.
Do I Need This Procedure?
Further procedures may be necessary if you experience any of these symptoms:
- Severe toothache or sensitivity when biting or chewing
- Nocturnal (night-time) pain
- Sensitivity to hot and cold, which lasts longer than a few seconds
- Swelling of your face or gum near the infected tooth
- A tooth that’s changing colour and becoming grey or black
- A tooth with deep decay
- A fracture in the tooth
- Swollen and tender gums
- Pus around an infected tooth
- A bitter taste in the mouth
- A loose tooth
Root canals tend to have very high success rates, even though it is an invasive procedure. Although extractions are cheaper, they leave gaps in your mouth, which ultimately may need to be filled with an implant.
