Children’s Dentistry in Dianella

It is recommended that children should be seen by a dentist from an early age, usually no later than the age of two. Good oral hygiene should begin as soon as possible, so teeth brushing and flossing should be established as soon as teeth start to appear.

Parents can help by providing appropriate-sized toothbrushes for their children and teaching them proper brushing techniques. Parents should also encourage their children to drink plenty of water and eat a healthy diet, as this will help protect their teeth from decay.

First Visit

When a child visits our clinic for the first time, we do not perform any procedures unless it’s an emergency. The first visit allows the child to become comfortable with their surroundings, the chair, the room, and especially the dentist. If the child is more comfortable sitting on their parent’s lap, that’s fine. Some enjoy sitting in the “big chair” by themselves.

We use what we call “Tell, Show, Do” to introduce children to the various machines and tools in the clinic. For example, we will show them the probing machine and let them see how it feels on their hand. Once they’re comfortable with that, we will ask if it is okay to use it on their teeth. We also use child-friendly language, i.e., anaesthetic is “sleepy juice”.

Good Oral Health For Life

Regular checkups with the dentist should be scheduled every six months or as recommended by the dentist, depending on the child’s individual needs. During these visits, the dentist will ensure the child’s teeth are in good condition, as well as provide any necessary treatments, such as fillings or sealants.

Other options available to help protect and maintain children’s dental health include fluoride varnish applications, which have been proven to reduce tooth decay in children, mouthguards for children who are involved in sports and dental sealants to protect molars from cavities.

Finally, it’s important to remember that prevention is the best form of dental care. Regular visits to the dentist, brushing twice a day, and eating nutritious foods will help ensure healthy teeth and gums for life. With proper preventive measures and regular checkups, children can enjoy beautiful smiles and good oral health for years to come.
